Quizzes

Questions students answer one at a time, checked the moment they answer. You see the results fill in live.

Writing a quiz

Quizzes › New quiz: a title, instructions, how many tries each question gets (1 to 5) and, if you like, a due date. Then the questions. Each has points and an explanation that students see once they have finished it.

Kinds of question:

  • Number: the answer, how far off still counts, and a unit. Students may type 3.5 or 3,5, fractions such as 3/4, and 1 000 or 1,000.
  • Words: every answer that counts, one per line. Capitals, extra spaces and a final full stop don't matter. Tick Chemistry for formulas (H2O and H₂O count the same).
  • One choice and Several choices.
  • Fill in: write the gaps in the question as [[answer]]; [[colour|color]] when either counts. Lines with | between cells become a table with gaps.
  • Matching, Order and Label a picture (click the picture to mark the places).
  • Flashcards: a front and a back. Add flashcards takes many at once, one per line (front | back).
  • Long answer, Speaking (the student records an answer), Drawing and A file: you mark these yourself (below).

Choose the kind of answer in its box (Checked at once or You mark), with an example beside it; All kinds… shows them all as buttons, and Compact view puts them back in the box. Changing the kind keeps what you have written.

A question can have a picture, a file, a sound or a film (the limits are under the button; Replace… swaps it), or one from your Library: From your library… lists your files in Library › Resources, and the question keeps its own copy. Give a picture a Description for students who can't see it. For listening, choose how often it may be played, whether Slower is allowed, and whether students may see the words.

Formula…, at the right of a question's text, puts maths where your cursor was: type it as it looks (/ makes a fraction, ^ a power) or in LaTeX. Under the text, Students see shows it drawn; click a formula there to change it. (If you know LaTeX, typing \(\frac{3}{4}\) in a question, a choice or an explanation does the same.)

Answer settings and teaching details, under each question, hold its points, how far off a number may be and its unit, Chemistry, the skill it practises and common mistakes: a wrong answer and what to tell a student who gives it.

Preview as a student shows the questions as your students will see them, before you save or give them: answer them to check them (nothing is sent or kept). A question not finished says what it still needs. Duplicate (beside it) makes a copy to change; a question deleted by mistake comes back with Undo. With five questions or more, the numbers above them jump to each.

The bookmark beside a question keeps it in your question bank, to reuse in other quizzes and groups.

A whole quiz can be kept too: Save to library… in its menu. From the library… at the top of Quizzes gives it again in any group, as a draft (see Your library).

Giving it

A new quiz is a draft. Give to class shows it to every student; Give to some… to the students you tick. Take back makes it a draft again. Editing a quiz you gave keeps the answers to the questions it still has.

What students see

One question at a time, with a dot for each. Check marks it at once: "Not quite. Try again" while tries are left; then the right answer and the explanation. At the end, their score and To practise: the skills they got wrong and your notes on their mistakes.

Questions they got wrong come back in Today's revision, at the top of their Quizzes page, over the following days until they get them right.

Results and marking

Results shows a table that fills in as students answer: ✓ right first time, ✓2 on a later try, ✗ wrong. Hover over a cell for the answer. Under the table, Skills shows how much of each the class got right, and Common mistakes shows who made which.

Long answers, recordings, drawings and files say To mark in their cell. Open it, give points and a comment, and the student sees them.

Start again clears one student's answers.
